Here’s the guidelines that we recommend to prepare for the winter time.
- Make sure all your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
- Change the furnace filters monthly. This ensures the most efficient economical operation of your system. Clogged filters can inhibit the operation of the system and increase energy bill.
- Disconnect and drain all garden hoses from outside faucets. Turn off exterior faucets.
- Always know where your water main is located in case you need to shut it off in emergencies.
- In the nights when temperature drops, it is good idea to let the water to trickle a little bit to avoid frozen pipe.
- Make sure any exposed pipes are insulated to help prevent them from freezing.
- If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees.
- Check your downspouts to be sure they are properly connected and are draining away from the house.
- If your home has a crawl space, close the door to help keep cold air out of this area. Be sure any pipes located in this area are property insulated.
- Inspect the fireplace damper for the proper opening and closing.
- Prepare items you will need if it snows such as shovels and ice melt. It is tenant’s responsibility to clear snow and ice from sidewalks and steps on the single family property.
- Prepare flashlights or battery operated lanterns for use during power shortages.
- Make sure all exterior lights are functional. The shorter daylight hours in the winter means those exterior lights are more important than ever.
- Drain the gas out of your lawnmower.
